Open Sundays March 8 and 15th from 1:30-4:30pm
This singular property was designed and lovingly handcrafted by the current owners and then lived in by them for the last 40+ years.
Every house has some number of bedrooms and baths, of course, and a kitchen etc. But you won’t find another house anywhere with a roughly 1,000 sq ft “Great room” and its use of huge Douglas Fir columns and beams that were salvaged from an old timber mill. Other salvaged wood (redwood) was used in all the kitchen cabinets and trim, plus the front door. The Great room has 13’ high ceilings and wooden double pane windows and doors that take advantage of all that height (and light). And down the center length of the room, the already high ceiling is topped with two banks of clerestory windows that add extra drama to the room and beautifully frame the large fireplace. This is the room where most of the home life is likely to take place, with its open kitchen, dining and living areas, all with rich wood tones and finishes (and newer bamboo floors). But wait, that’s not all….! The Great room is wrapped on three sides by a brand new 1,900 sq ft deck, part of which was built around two large California Pepper trees. This is a house that effortlessly brings the outdoors in, while maintaining a warmth and elegance that belies the rustic materials. Indoor/outdoor living and entertaining was never more gracious and inviting!
Originally, the house just had the three bedrooms and two baths on the second floor. These rooms were built into the hillside with exposed sandstone walls and are meant to feel cozy and somewhat “cavelike”. The idea was to be able to move from the drama and expansiveness of the Great room” into more private and peaceful areas. Several years later, the upper level Master and 5th bedroom were added, and these two rooms give back the light and expansive views of the surrounding trees and hills.
The other practical considerations are the solar PV electric system, updated central heating and A/C, a convenient laundry area, abundant storage and a carport for two vehicles (with overhead storage for your kayaks and other oversized toys).
The house sits roughly in the middle of its 18,655 sq foot gently sloping lot. There is a second driveway for additional off-street parking.
